Silkscreen printing first appeared in China in 10th century where a silk weave was stretched over a wooden frame which was then used to transfer ink onto a surface, except in areas made impermeable to the ink by a blocking stencil. Today the silk has been replaced by synthetic threads, the wooden frames by aluminium ones and the stencils are mostly created photographically. Once the screen is made and placed onto screen bed, a rubber blade called a squeegee is moved across the screen to fill the open mesh apertures with ink, and a reverse stroke then causes the screen to touch the substrate (usually paper or fabric) momentarily along a line of contact. This causes the ink to wet the substrate and be pulled out of the mesh apertures as the screen springs back after the blade has passed. One colour is printed at a time, so several screens can be used to produce a multicoloured image or design. This process is caused colour separation and continues until the image is complete.
