Annotation to this series:
During my 6-year circumnavigation of the world, I have often come into contact with the increasing pollution and overfishing of the seas. In the middle of the Pacific I watched fishing fleets that were pulling incredible large nets with them. Garbage from civilization accumulates on deserted islands.

Anita Kaufmann is a contemporary German artist whose profound experiences at sea have significantly shaped her artistic journey. In 2009, Kaufmann embarked on an extraordinary adventure, moving onto a sailing yacht with her husband and two children. Over the course of six years, she traversed 30,000 nautical miles (55,000 kilometers) and visited 28 countries. This journey exposed her to diverse cultures and included encounters with storms, vast ocean expanses, transatlantic passages, and isolated islands, as well as extended stays in vibrant cities like Sydney, Barcelona, and New York City, where they anchored in the Hudson River before the Manhattan skyline for months.
A significant portion of her travels was spent in French Polynesia, where she immersed herself in the local culture, embracing the philosophy of taking one's time and living in the moment. This exposure to different cultures and people profoundly influenced her artistic expression, leading her to shift from abstract art to creating compelling human faces.
Despite this shift, Kaufmann occasionally returns to her roots in abstract art, often working in elegant black and white, sometimes incorporating colored accents. Her art reflects a rich tapestry of experiences and inspirations gathered from her years at sea, making her work both unique and deeply evocative.
