Bedeutung:
Römische Kunst: Memento mori, Symbole für Leben und Tod. Mosaik aus Pompei(30 v. Chr. – 14 n. Chr.),
„Memento Mori“ zum Beispiel ist eine klare allegorische Darstellung. Es zeigt das Rad der Fortuna, das den Reichen (purpurrotes Tuch und Zepter links) verarmen lassen und den Armen (Bettlertasche und Ziegenfell rechts) reich machen kann. Der Tod (Totenschädel) lauert zu allen Zeiten. Das Leben dagegen hängt an einem seidenen Faden. Wenn dieser reißt, fliegt die Seele (Schmetterling) davon.
