Philms, born in 1970, lives and works in France, where he is distinguished by his figurative drawings made mainly with pastel on paper, charcoal on cardboard and charcoal on paper. His work is deeply influenced by masters of painting such as Titian, Zorn, Leonardo da Vinci, Chardin, Corot, Courbet, Rembrandt, Tintoretto, Michelangelo, Degas, Bonnard, Sorolla, Botticelli, Monet and Boudin.
His artistic journey is not linear, but develops slowly and in depth. Before devoting himself fully to drawing, Philms was a passionate film buff, which explains his pseudonym. His love for cinema led him to photography, where he preferred black and white to be able to control everything, from shooting to printing. This taste for photographic grain then naturally led him towards drawing and painting.
Although self-taught, Philms acquired a solid artistic education by following evening classes in visual arts in Paris. From 2013 to 2014, he also followed training to become a trainer of plastic arts workshops, obtaining NSF Code 333 and 132. During this period, he had the chance to meet teachers and students who nourished his passion and know-how.
Philms completed his apprenticeship by making pencil copies based on the great masters of painting in Parisian museums or from photos. He also participates in numerous free live model workshops and draws from life, which continually enriches his work.
Through his works, Philms captures the essence of the subjects he draws, exploring nuance and texture with remarkable sensitivity. His figurative style, combined with a mastery of pastel and charcoal techniques, gives life to vibrant and timeless compositions.
